Ethics Education Radio Programs Go to Uganda

The GNRC Africa initiated ethics education radio program- Focus on Peace, that has been running since last year in Kenya and Somaliland found its way to Kampala Uganda on the 16th July 2010. The program content combines themes from the UNICEF and UNESCO approved ethics education tool book Learning to Live Together, children’s voices regarding peace- moderated by prominent religious leaders in the region.

Radio programs have been proposed as the appropriate outlet for youth voices on peace throughout East and the Horn of Africa. The long-term goals of this initiative are to have a strong youth network for peace in Uganda and indeed the entire East and Horn of Africa, with the capacity to generate and maintain discourse on themes related to peace and peace building. Other objectives of the program include to sustain peace and education for peace, as a poverty reduction strategy at the grassroots, to enhance the capacity of children and young people to affectively communicate through the mass media-specially radio, to plant the seeds for peaceful co-existence among children and young people from diverse background and to raise the profile of children/youth as a category and peace as a value within public discourse.

The peace education program in Kampala will be aired by the Voice of Africa (VOA) Radio. The VOA radio- Uganda is proud of its wide listenership transmitting on 92.3FM in the central region, 102.7FM in Masaka region, 90.6FM western region and 100.2 FM eastern regions of Uganda. This combined listenership totals to over 0.5 million people in Uganda. VOA is owned by the Union of Muslim Councils for East, Central and Southern Africa (UMC) which also owns voice of Africa Rwanda and has partnered with Radio Islam of Mozambique, IQRA FM of Kenya and 789 of Cape Town.
To complement the radio program, rechargeable radios were donated to the VOA radio station by GNRC staff. The radios will be distributed to families, peace clubs in schools and youth as gifts to encourage listenership of the Focus on Peace radio program and other ethics education information.

Speaking at the UMC offices where the radios were donated Sheikh Haroon Sengooba the secretary general of UMC thanked GNRC Africa for the radios and its efforts to encourage peace via the ethics education program. Also present at the ceremony was Mr Ntege Ismail the general manager of VOA and Ms Faridah Nakawooya the secretary for women affairs.
Day of Prayer and Action Celebrated in Hargeisa Somaliland with Humility and Passion.
A World Day of Prayer and Action for Children is a day of solidarity among religious and secular organizations united by their common aspiration and shared vision of a world in which all our children will grow up to their full human potential, with their rights to safety, security, integrity, dignity and honor in all societies. This was the message for the 20th November 2009 day of prayers and action for children that was warmly received by children in Hargeisa Somaliland.

DPAC was thus celebrated by Children and community leaders from different schools including Sheikh Ali Cismaan primary school, Macalin Da’ud Primary School, and Dayib Guray Secondary school who gathered and marked the day with great passion at Hayda meeting hall in Hargeisa Somaliland. Early in the morning at 7:00 am on the 20th November, children were collected from their homes to visit one of the orphanages in Hargeisa. Children were shown the real situation of children whose parents died or are missing. They saw where children sleep, what they eat and how difficult it is to live without parents. Children introduced their names and narrated their stories. One of the oldest children called, Farhan, told visitors that he spent 17 years in the orphanage. Farhan said “I was brought here when I was three. Now, I studied primary education and a few other diplomas including computer. I was helped by some relatives and the orphanage. Still I need to do secondary education and to get a good job. Life in the orphanage is very difficult and you can see it. Imagine, eating the food you saw every morning.” Later, children and their teachers prayed for the children and wished for them better future, health and happiness.
A meeting was later arranged and held in HYDA meeting hall. Children, teachers, sheikhs, NGO activists and others attended the one day meeting commemorating it with great enthusiasm.
First, one delegate from the Somali Association for Youth Salvation (SAYS) was honored to open the session and introduced the day of prayer and the activities to be conducted during the course of the day. The session was commenced with verses of holy Quran, then Mr. Araxmaan from SAYS explained the aim of this meeting, he said we, SAYS, are closely working with GNRC in the field of peace education, running peace clubs in schools, radio programs for children, and other sectors. He said ‘SAYS has established about 10 peace clubs in Hargeisa and Borama.
Mr. Khadar a teacher from Dayib Guray secondary in Hargeisa told participants that we need to bring our children up with great responsibility. Children, if they are handled with adequate care and education, will grow both physically and mentally. This requires parents, teachers, relatives and all players of the society to collaborate in the efforts we want to make our children leaders of their own society. The teacher said “children are like young trees, they need more food and monitoring”.
Sheikh Yasin, a renowned sheikh started his speech with verses from Quran and he explained them in Somali. The sheikh has seriously pointed out the significance of the religion in the life of Muslim people. He said, region makes peace and security. Religion makes children see the light of the life. He said religion is the best advice one can have. The sheikh told that children the need to refer to religion whenever they meet any hardship and difficult circumstances. He told children to pray when they are doing exams, when they are going to schools and when they are leaving schools. The sheikh, with a prolonged speech, told that regions of different kinds in this world agree on peace and security matter which is the best interest of all inhabitants of the world. Sheikh Yasin added “no matter of the difference in clan, religion, age, color and gender, one must know that peace is important and very crucial”. He said “we need to understand peace from the roots. We need to learn the culture of living peacefully side-by-side. That is how we can all achieve our targets both here and life after here” .Eventually, the sheikh told children to raise their hands and say amen to his prayers. He prayed for the children. He prayed for a nation with children having all their rights; Children with better understanding of their religion; children with tolerance to one another. He prayed for prosperity and better life for all and particularly for children. The sheikh prayed that Allah makes parents comprehend their roles and responsibilities in raising their children and fulfilling their life’s duties adequately. Children from schools raised comments regarding the region aspects of the rights of children. The sheikh answered most of the questions highlighting how important is to believe what Quran and hadith of Prophet Mohamed “PBUH”. In Quran, he said all rights are mentioned. In hadith, there are more examples and details. Therefore, you (children) need to learn Islam and act on it.

Mr. Nur Adan Shirdon presented a short report concerning the situation of children in Somaliland. Mr. Nur narrated statistical figures on the children’s education. He said out every four children in Somaliland only one goes to school. Besides, he told participants that most of the children in rural areas are deprived of many rights including rights to basic health and education. He said there are huge figures indicating the size of problems faced by children in Somaliland. He said that children in Somaliland suffer child labor, rape, imprisonment, abandonment, torture and more.
The Objectives of the Hargeisa DPAC celebrations were to to bring together a shared anguish at the suffering of children, to offer a collective hope for the dignity and integrity of Children and to make a new commitment to action on behalf of Children through Prayer and to a large extent they were meet. The Children were also distributed with free rechargeable radios which they were to use for an ethics education radio program within their peace clubs and or families. In the End most of the participants understood the situation of children and were happy to be associated with DPAC, GNRC Africa and SAYS activities on the welfare and wellbeing of children.
Let us not decrease our pace, for we are so close to success and farther
from defeat
Exchange smiles with your mates, have a seat
Have something to drink and eat
Shake hands, share a hug, peace be unto you my brother
This is where I come from, this is my story, embrace with one another
I am Tanzania, am Mozambique and I am Zambia
Welcome Kenya, Malawi, good to see you too Uganda
Jews Muslims Christians different roads towards the same destination
Peace in us with others one of the greatest salvations
Not only within Tanzania but through out African nations
Anything is possible just broaden your imaginations
Let’s fill the earth with a child’s laughter
Let peace among humanity undo all the disaster
Forgive others as you must be forgiven
Let peace on earth strike a smile on God’s face up in heaven
Why can’t a Palestine and a Jew share a drink
Just let the love of God float and the human hatred sink
Let’s make new memories, new good ones
peace within a nation is within a family,
fathers, daughters, mothers and sons
From neighbors too and a wise choice of words from our tongues
Teach and embrace love to all your young ones
Good ethics and morals are stronger weapons then the bombs and the guns
Climate Change Declaration by the Peace Club Members of Tanzania

CLIMATE CHANGE DECLERATION BY THE PEACE CLUB MEMBERS OF TANZANIA
FORUM HELD IN SEPTEMBER 2009 AT ALLIANCE FRANCAISE

On behalf of the youth and children of Tanzania and Africa we are deeply perturbed by the impacts and causes of climate change on human and natural systems.

We reaffirm the fundamental relationship between human and natural systems.

We firmly support upholding principles of equity and human and eco rights in all processes of decision making and implementation of policies, laws and programs on climate change.

We recognize the extreme vulnerability of Tanzania to climate change and its low historical responsibility for the contribution of atmospheric greenhouse gases.

We appreciate the shared cultural heritage, common histories, geographical proximity and calling for a strong concerted community based, local, regional and global action.

We seek effective governance and management of resources that aligns effort to eradicate social injustices and combat disaster and displacement caused by climate change.

We believe in affective participation and negotiation by all countries, especially those most vulnerable, at the global level towards concrete solutions to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

On behalf of the youth and children of Tanzania we are committed to:

a. Forming a youth and children network that will unite grass-root and country level movements across Tanzania.

b. Articulating and committing to region wide and country level strategies that will address climate change.

c. Conducting follow up events that will review progress made, plan future events and provide a venue for sharing ideas and inspiring each other.

d. Playing a major role in sensitizing the society, youth and children in particular, and disseminating information on climate change issues and raising awareness.

e. Creating a generation of youth and children who will lead a low carbon life style ensuring sustainability for inter generational equity.

and we strongly demand that the government of Tanzania should:

a. Develop innovative and efficient ways to reduce its CO2 emissions to prevent the damage of the ozone layer as well as to find new solutions to put a stop to acid rain
polluting the environment and affecting people’s lives worldwide.

b. Remain cognizant of the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities and the need to take nationally appropriate mitigation measures but also lobby for advanced
developing countries inter alias India and China to take mandatory mitigation targets as well.

c. Move towards a low carbon economy through the support of developed countries in terms of grants in financing and technology transfer.

d. Ensure that the policies and programs of international funding bodies fully appreciate the grave nature of climate change and are climate sensitive.

      e. Include youths and children in all policy matters surrounding climate change and more specifically for the inclusion of youth and children representatives in the official
delegation to climate change negotiation. We also call on our government to endorse the inclusion of youth and children as a constituency to UNFCCC negotiations.

We would like thank:
Norwegian Church Aid for Funding
Alliance Francaise for providing the venue
GNRC Africa facilitates Peace workshop in the East Africa Cup 2009

The East Africa Cup --2009

The promotion of peace is essential if our world is to prosper. This is true for all children, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, culture, geographic location, or age.
Since the organizers of the East Africa Cup both recognize and support these principles, they permitted participating children at their event to meet with facilitator from the GNRC Africa during the 3-days of the tournament. These meetings lasted for 2-hours each and promoted issues relating to peace, conflict resolution and Ethics Education.

Participating youth eagerly engaged in discussions over a wide variety of subjects including:
• How to live and work together
• Learning to be empathetic (understanding and respecting others regardless of differences)
• Human dignity and responsibility
• Developing a positive attitude when facing challenges
• Non-violent confrontation and conflict resolution methods

While facilitators directed the course of discussions by outlining the major points of each topic, participants were given ample time to express their views and to ask questions. Follow-up questions were encouraged. Contradictions in positions were explored and the use of personal examples and experiences encouraged during the individual presentation of ideas and positions. This give-and-take resulted in lively and informative debate and fostered the goals of the workshop

The participants were enthusiastic and excited: at the end of each session the discussions carried on beyond the allotted times. All participants, including the supervisors and facilitators, were happy with the workshops and how it addressed, in various ways, the daily challenges that confront all of us and hinder progress toward achieving peace and conflict resolution through Ethics Education. The discussions aided participants in developing skills in addressing personal problems and applying a variety of skills and options when facing difficult situations or decisions.

A variety of points were advocated by participants, including:
• Promoting peace through religion
• The use of diversity as a strength and unifying factor
• Developing new skills and methods for influencing policy makers
• Additional education and energization of the public in these methods
• Capitalization on the large number of participants in forums like the Africa Cup 2009 and addressing additional subjects at these opportunities
• The use of surveys and questionnaires to allow participants of share their positive and negative comments on the usefulness of the program
• Follow-up contact with participants to encourage implementation of the lessons and to involve them in future events

It should be noted that there were more than 1000 participating children in the East Africa Cup 2009. Unfortunately, there were only two facilitator available (more were originally scheduled, however, they backed out at the last minute due to personal reasons). Each facilitator conducted groups with 50 or fewer participants. This resulted in making it impossible to accommodate all of the large number of children who wanted to attend these sessions. Therefore, we are actively seeking volunteers to work as facilitator and aides at future events. If you are interested in participating, please contact us. We can certainly use your help.

Continue reading GNRC Africa facilitates Peace workshop in the East Africa Cup 2009

ZIFF PEACE CAMP REPORT, 30th JUNE – 3rd JULY, 2009.

I. INTRODUCTION

The Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) has been celebrated for the last 12 years. Since 2004, GNRC -Africa has been participating and exploring the ZIFF time to conduct Peace Camp for youths. The objective of these camps is to learn and share experiences on topics related to Peace and Ethics. Every year there is a focused ZIFF theme that GNRC adopts and, when necessary, modifies to suit its Mission and Vision. For 2009, the ZIFF theme was "Enduring Links, People, Media, and Environment". Once adopted by GNRC, the theme became: "Lasting Peace between People, Communication, Environment and Ethics". The ZIFF peace camp was held at Ecrotanal Hall in Zanzibar from 30th. June through 3rd. July, 2009. This affair involved 41 youth (20 girls and 21 boys) from peace clubs of Dar-Es-salaam, Arusha, Pemba, Unguja and Nairobi (Kenya) GNRC staff in addition to various partner organizations and the Ministry of Education and Training (Zanzibar).

Zameer, GNRC Program Manager, opened with a brief introduction of GNRC and its Peace and Ethics activities. He also asked the participants and guests to have a moment of silence in memory of the Late Prof. Haroub Othman who passed 3 days before. The late professor worked closely with GNRC and, as ambassador of peace, spent endless hours in promoting and coordinating efforts to achieve peace. After the introduction, Mr. Noorali welcomed the guest of Honor, Prof. Martin Mhando (ZIFF Director), to officially launch the peace camp workshop.

Prof. Mhando thanked the Ministry of Education (Zanzibar) for their commitment and cooperation in molding and working closely with children and organizations like GNRC, ZIFF, Children Panorama and others. Special thanks were extended to the Peace ambassadors (Children and Youths). Prof. Mhando let the audience know that ethics is "a Social system by which a certain community works by itself, runs and manages its daily life. The system has specific basic and good social guidelines."

Prof. Mhando stated that in every society a child has his/her place and contributes to the harmony of the family if the latter is built on peace and ethics. He explained that every family, society, nation and the world at large will be proud to create a child who has a great role in future generations that have no discrimination and/or killings of albinos Est. He further explained that one of the reasons ZIFF and GNRC work closely with children is to inspire Peace and Ethics within them.

Prof. Mhando's speech concluded by urging the children to make a special request to the parents to have a peaceful 2010 presidential election in Zanzibar and Tanzania in general. The professor stated that a peaceful election is possible if people can have the spirit to enduring one another.

II. OBJECTIVES

1. To give an avenue for exposure to youths and children (Peace Ambassadors) who have previously never attended ZIFF peace camps and to allow them to meet, learn and interact with people from different parts of the world with different backgrounds in all aspects (e.g. religion, traditions and culture, economically and talents in fine and performing arts.)
2. To reflect and learn from the GNRC-year theme during ZIFF "Lasting Peace between People, Communication, Environment and Ethics"
3. To share experiences on the topic and look for ways forward for lasting peace.
4. To expose its peace club members to the different educational sessions that were held during ZIFF and to realize the lessons learned in their community/society and strive for change.
5. Raise awareness on its Peace building work through peace camp sessions, film animation and Conscious Music.
6. To practice and cement the idea of "living together is possible regardless of the different background" and ensure its existence among the children and youths.

III. INPUT

IV. OUTPUT
The 41 Children, youths and all those who attended were given a chance to learn from the presentations and theme related discussions. Some of the points learned were:

1. Good ethics is the foundation and vision to the lives of all people and the environment.
2. Bringing up children is the task of the whole society. Therefore, a child who lacks ethical values should not be punished but he should be guided to good values.
3. Human being and environment depend on each other. Therefore, keeping the environment safe is fundamental to all mankind.
4. Media have a great role in either bringing solutions or conflicts to a societies. Therefore, media should, at all time, consider ethics in all stages of its work.
5. Peace ambassadors met and interacted with internationally prominent figures like Mr. Danny Glover, UNICEF Good Will Ambassador, and got to hear encouraging messages on peace building and work.
6. The workshop youths came up with recommendation that the government and the society at large should work on (see annex "Statement and Recommendations”).
7. The government and the society got to learn, directly or through media, of GNRC's contributions for peace building activities.
8. During the Peace March and the Closing ceremony, the guest of honor was the Hon. Khamis Jabir, the Deputy Minister of Ministry of Education and Training in Zanzibar, who was joined with the special guest Mr. Danny Glover.
9. The Learning to Live Together toolkit and Folk Stories were distributed to the Ministry of Education to the guests of honor, distinguished guests, media, and peace ambassadors and to 6 schools in Zanzibar on thePeace March Day.
10. The peace ambassadors made a presentation through role play, debate and poetry. Suhaila Salum Abdallah from Shamiani peace club, for instance, delivered an ethics poem while others expressed what they had learned via different midiums( See annex).
11. Exposure for future networking.
12. To encourage peace ambassadors to have a meaningful participation on peace activities, GNRC gave awards for the best 3 Peace clubs (viz. Dar, Pemba and Unguja), The Best Ambassador during ZIFF and the 3 best participants during ZIFF.
13. Got to learn from GNRC Nairobi programs as Mr. Said briefly shared with the participants the peace initiative activities in Nairobi and Somalia.

V. CONCLUSION

The ZIFF 2009 was successful despite minor, yet workable, challenges. All the shortcomings that were identified during ZIFF should be worked on and there is room for improvement. A representative/Observer from NCA and others commended GNRC for a job well done in continuing to mold youths and children to a culture of peace. The NCA representative was amazed by the abilities and participation of all the Peace ambassadors during the workshop. During the Peace March (last day) 6 schools, 600 children obtained permission from the Ministry of Education and joined the march from Ecrotanal Hall to the Old Fort where the Guest of Honor (Mr. Khamis Jabir, Dep. Minister of Education) and Special Guest (Danny Glover, UNICEF goodwill ambassador) received them and their message. The march was led by a Brass band, while Dogodogo Multimedia dance group was performing at Old Fort ground.

Continue reading GNRC Workshop in Zanzizibar International Film Festival 2009

STATEMENT AND RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE CHILDREN WHO PARTICIPATED IN A PEACE CAMP WORKSHOP ORGANIZED BY THE GLOBAL NETWORK OF RELIGIONS FOR CHILDREN (GNRC)-Africa THROUGH ZANZIBAR INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (ZIFF) July 3, 2009

Received by DEPUTY MINISTER OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING – Zanzibar and UNICEF Ambassador Danny Glover.
Your Excellency guest of honor, we are 41 youth and children, participants in a Peace Camp from Unguja, Pemba, Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Kenya and Somalia. We have learned a lot in the past three days beginning 30th June 2009 up to 2nd July 2009. Everything we learned during these three days reflected the theme “Lasting peace between People, Communication, Environment and Ethics”.
Good ethics is the foundation and vision of every individual’s well being.

We believe that the upbringing of the young generation is the responsibility of the society and therefore, children should be taught and made fully aware of the morals and values for the prosperity of the society as a whole. And not to be removed or punished.
We have learned that human’s and environment depend on one another. Therefore, it is every individual’s responsibility to keep the environment safe, friendly, and clean. Media have also played a great role in bringing solutions or conflicts into societies. Therefore media should continue to consider ethics at every stage.
Yesterday 2nd July 2009 we were overwhelmed by the words of UNICEF good will Ambassador Mr. Danny Glover who visit our in-session workshop by a surprise.
Your Excellency guest of honor, we the youth and children recommend the following to your good office:

• Youth should be in the forefront of issues regarding Peace, Ethics and Environment.

• For the sake of Peace, societies should work together in harmony regardless of age, gender, religion and political boundaries.

• The government to create legislation to support Ethics and good values, in order to bring and maintain Peace.

• Government should introduce regulations and laws governing all matters concerning the environment.
We give our special thanks to GNRC Africa and ZIFF for their support and the facilitating of the Peace Camp Workshop for youth and children, and the Ministry of Education for their cooperation. The Ministry of Education should take in consideration to allow peace education in schools around the country.
Thank you.

Continue reading Statement By The Children developed during the ZIFF 09 Workshop

The Day of African Child

Introduction

Each year in Africa GNRC celebrates the Day of the African Child. The day is commemorated for the children who lost their lives on June 17th 1976 while demanding their rights to receive education during the Apartheid era in South Africa.

With this date event in mind, earlier this year GNRC members met with government and other stakeholders to promote the idea of a joint commemoration. GNRC staff initiated meetings with the Ilala Regional Office and, after reaching agreement, further coordinated with the Social Development Officer for additional conceptual development and implementation.

Preparation

In preparation for this event four meetings occurred: four weeks prior to the launch of the event. Participants were representatives from Global Networking of Religions for Children (GNRC), Plan International, Right to Play, Mtandao Wa Habari Wa Vajana Tanzania (MTAHAWAVITA), and government officials from the Ilala region.

During these discussions it was determined to conduct to primary events:

1. A one-day children's symposium for DAC statement preparation (June 13, 2009)

2. Day of the African Child (June 16, 2009)

GNRC responsibilities included:
• the one-day children's symposium for DAC statement preparation (June 13, 2009)
• contribution of 25 T-shirts for children attending the symposium
• designation and delivery of 11-13 children to the one-day symposium and 300 children from the various peace clubs for the Day of the African Child event (June 16, 2009).
• Provide and exhibit an animated film, performance drama, acrobats, poetry readings, traditional dance and other activities from the Peace Clubs
• locate and provide a public address system for use at the DAC
• provide refreshments and fare for the children

Objectives

During the preparation phase the following objectives were identified:
• to come together and reflect on the events of June 16, 1976 and the subsequent yearly commemoration of the Day of the African Child
• to join with other children's rights activist and continue to strongly advocate for the rights of our children.
• to identify/ realize each stakeholders strength and potentiality
• Join with other stakeholders to develop ideas and preparations for commemoration of DAC
• share resources among stakeholders to provide a more thorough and efficient program than would be possible for any one individual organization
• provide opportunities for the children to explore, discuss, and develop their rights, responsibilities and opportunities
• use this venue to identify and promote talented children

Success and Achievements

The following achievements are demonstrative of the success of the symposium and DAC:
• Fifty-three children sponsored through the GNRC representing the three regional municipalities conferred at the Salvation Army during the symposium on June 13, 2009.
• During the DAC, GNRC launched six new Peace Clubs, distributed more than 500 copies of the Folk Stories book produced by GNRC to participating children and schools
• Twenty copies of the Learn-to-Live-Together toolkit were distributed to participating guests from the educational sector and the ministry

Reacting to the DAC yearly theme, "A Suitable Conducive Africa for the Child, Enhance and Sustain His Rights to Survival" ( in Swahili, "Africa imfaayo Mtoto Himiza ne endeleza hakie ya Kuishi"), the children focused on problems relating to inadequate health centers and services, malaria and the killings of albino. All of these factors impede the "Right to Survival" at different stages of development from conception through adulthood. The children decided to compose a petition (See Attached) to the government and society-at-large promising and urging for the sake of other children to following:

• The children will continue to sensitize one another and continue advocating for their "Right to Survival" and avoiding exposure to risky environments e.g., drug abuser, pushers, etc.
• To continue to meet and evaluate what is being to used to enhance and sustain child survival
• Advocate for the protection of children from danger, including the need for adequate and balanced meals, health centers, etc.
• Consideration of the needs of children in all social decision making
• Urging NGOs and CBOs to continue support for programs assisting expectant mothers
• Urging NGOs and CBOs to continue educational programs on family planning and child safety issues
• Urging the government to continue the distribution of free mosquito nets to expectant mothers and children
• Urging the development of additional and improved health services and the ward level
• Enhancement of the public health vaccination program

Other notable issues:
• Media coverage played a key role in the success of these events, especially through raising awareness of the movement throughout the society-at-large.
• GNRC provided documentation of these events through video and still photography
• Networking expansion was realized through working with other organizations and stakeholders
• The government interacted with GNRC and they developed a further understanding and comfort with our role within society

SUMMARY OF OUTCOME

In general, every stakeholder fulfilled its role from the preparation phase through the DAC on June 16, 2009. About 800 children and 100 adults representing the government, GNRC, Plan International, MTAHAWAVITA, invited partners and guests gathered for the commemoration at William Benjamin Mkapa grounds. Entertainment and learning opportunities were enjoyed by all participants.

Conclusion

The event was successful. A total of 900 children and adults gathered to commemorate the Day of the African Child. All stakeholders participated in expressing, sharing and developing their ideas on the importance of children to the future of Africa and the world. The replacement Guest of Honor Ms. Rita Kibati, Unkonga Special Seats Counselor, commended all who participated in making the DAC 2009 successful. She also urged the society-at-large and the stakeholders to join hands and enhance and sustain the "Suitable Africa for the Children to Survive" campaign, and for each participant to enjoy life. She condemned the killing of Albinos for superstitious and greedy reasons. On behalf of the government she promised to work on the children's petition and concluded her speech by saying, "Every child is everyone's child, so it is everyone's responsibility to make certain all children survive."

It is GNRC's hope that all Peace Club members, staff, partners and everyone will work towards and live up to this year's DAC theme and bring PEACE.
